Comparing Felt Roll Prices? Put the Quotes on the Same Area Basis

A price per linear metre does not tell you which felt roll offers the lower material cost unless the widths are also known. To compare quotations, record the roll width and length, calculate the quoted area, and confirm how much of that width is usable for your parts.

For a rectangular roll, area in square metres equals width in metres multiplied by length in metres. Price per square metre equals the roll price divided by that area. Use the same units throughout.

Separate nominal area from usable material

Here is a hypothetical comparison. A roll quoted at 1 metre wide and 20 metres long contains 20 square metres of nominal area. A roll quoted at 1.5 metres wide and 20 metres long contains 30 square metres. These are calculation examples, not ROLKING product specifications or prices.

Ask whether the quoted width includes edges that cannot be used for your process. Confirm the minimum usable width, agreed dimensional tolerances and how any joins or material defects will be identified. If there is an allowance for unusable sections, record how it affects the delivered quantity.

Check the cutting layout

Area is a useful purchasing comparison, but it does not determine the number of finished pieces by itself. The dimensions of your parts and their arrangement across the roll also matter.

Send a cutting layout or part drawing with the inquiry. Ask whether the proposed width suits that layout. A wider roll may leave more offcut for a particular part, so compare the material needed for the intended order rather than assuming more width always means better value.

Keep the material specification beside the price

Do not compare area prices while overlooking fiber composition, thickness, mass per unit area and any required finish or backing. State the specifications you need, including agreed tolerances and any approved reference sample.

Confirm the number of rolls, length per roll, packing dimensions and gross weight. For repeat orders, retain the approved specification and identify the material reference on the purchase order.

Buyer questions

Is price per square metre enough to choose a supplier?

It makes the quantity basis clearer. Material requirements, usable yield, freight and acceptance criteria still need to be compared.

What if a quotation uses price per kilogram?

Ask for the corresponding quantity basis and the material specification. Any area conversion depends on the applicable mass per unit area; confirm that value rather than assuming it.

What should I include in an inquiry?

Send the material requirements, part dimensions or cutting layout, needed quantity and preferred roll format. Say whether your equipment imposes a width or roll-size limit.

See ROLKING polyester felt and discuss the required material and supply format before comparing the final quotations.
