We tested the best under-bed storage solutions that are durable, spacious, easy to use, stylish and practical.
Whether it’s extra pillows, blankets, or out-of-season clothing, finding a place to store it all in your bedroom can be challenging, and if you’re short on closet space, it can be even more challenging. While you may already be using the space under your bed to store things you don’t think are important enough to keep in a closet or dresser, that space can quickly become cluttered—and underbed storage bins, containers, and baskets can help.
“One of my favorite places to store essentials is the space under the bed,” says organization expert Leslie Lehr. “Using this unused area for storage not only keeps your cutter clean, but also creates a comfortable spot for a restful night’s sleep.”
To find the best under-bed storage solutions, we tested 14 popular products in our homes. We rated each storage solution on five factors: ease of use, durability, quality, capacity, and value. We also consulted Phoenix-based professional organizer and lifestyle expert Lehr to learn more about under-bed storage, including how to choose the most effective storage container solution for your space and what to look for when shopping.
We evaluated 18 under-bed storage solutions based on capacity, quality, ease of use, and durability. For more information on how we test under-bed storage solutions, check out our testing process below.
Fabric-sided storage containers can sometimes become wobbly, which is a problem if you use them to store clothes: The clothes can get wrinkled if the soft sides shift. So we were happy to see the StorageLAB Underbed Storage Container, which features polyester-blend walls that are durable and hold their shape.
The plastic top is soft and flexible, allowing the container to expand to accommodate bulky items like sweaters and jackets without being too compressed. In general, we like containers that are structured in some areas and flexible in others.
In addition to the quality construction, these fabric containers also get bonus points for their capacity. During our testing, we were able to fit more than half of our clothes in one. We liked that the container is easily expandable, allowing us to fit more items in, even though the top is a bit bulky.
Opening and closing the container is also easy. The zippers are well made, durable, and do not catch on the clothes inside. We used the container for quite a while during testing and were pleased that the container and its base remained intact, and the entire product retained its integrity. We also noticed that the clothes looked new even after some storage.
While we highly recommend these bins, be sure to measure the space under your bed before purchasing. We didn’t take measurements and found that the bin protruded slightly from the bed. Depending on the amount of space you have under your bed, you may want to consider a low-profile version of this brand’s bin.
We moved twice during testing, and these storage boxes made transporting our belongings easy. Even in the back of trucks and vans, the bottoms of the storage boxes remained relatively clean and our clothes undamaged.
While we wish these containers would fit better under our large bed, we think their durability and ability to protect our belongings make this an option worth considering.
It’s not roomy enough to hold a lot of heavy clothes or blankets, and we found the zipper a little flimsy.
For those looking for a cheaper option, one of the best under-bed storage solutions is the Better Homes & Gardens Zippered Rolling Storage Bin. We like the overall design, which includes gray fabric sides and a clear plastic top, allowing you to see what’s inside at a glance.
During testing, we put a few blankets in there and they were clean, without any bugs or dust. We noticed some dust on the plastic cover, so we knew it was doing its job.
We’re especially pleased with this trash can’s wheels, which are cleverly attached to the base. The wheels glide smoothly and easily across hard surfaces, and we really like that you don’t have to pull hard to get the bin out from under your bed.
The wheels continue to work properly over time, and the bottom of the container remains intact because it does not rub against the floor. Plus, what is nice: there are two side handles reinforced with metal. They are convenient and durable, which makes it easy to lift the container for transportation or pull it out from under the bed.
In our opinion, the biggest downside is the quality of the zipper, which we found a little difficult to open and close. We were hesitant to tug too hard on the zipper, especially in the corners, and were afraid that if we filled the bin too tightly, we would rip the zipper completely.
The plastic shell, while soft and comfortable, feels a little flimsy and doesn’t look like it will last for years. The bottom of the storage box is made of fabric, and we were worried about whether it would last long enough. However, we think that as long as you don’t stuff them too tightly and are careful when zipping and unzipping, these storage boxes are worth the money and will work as promised.
We have kept the blanket in this storage box for six months and it has not had any dust or moth holes. We love that this storage container has wheels so that when we need extra blankets, we can easily access them.
There was a little dust on the top of the bin, but it was easy to wipe off, so we didn’t find it a big deal. In fact, we think it’s a sign that the bin is doing its job and keeping dust out of our storage.
While we found the zipper a little flimsy, it worked during testing. Overall, we still think this product is worth recommending.
At first glance, we didn’t think the Anyoneer Under Bed Shoe Organizer had much capacity. However, the capacity of these durable fabric storage boxes exceeded our expectations, making them one of the best under bed storage solutions worth considering.
We were able to fit 12 sweatshirts in it (three per stack) as well as 8 pairs of shoes. We especially like these shoe storage containers because they have built-in dividers, all of which are adjustable. We like that you can adjust the spacing depending on the type of shoes (heels or flats) rather than forcing them into a predetermined space. All the dividers have sturdy and flexible walls, so they won’t get crushed by shoes and everything inside is protected.
We found the top zipper to be easy to open and close, but we did notice that it required the organizer to be completely removed from under the bed to open it properly. Since this option is not very tall, we felt that the zipper could get caught on the fabric inside if the organizer was too full.
The zipper also wasn’t the most durable, sometimes getting caught in corners and the fabric pull tab started to wear out after just a few uses, which left us disappointed.
Finally, while the contents don’t seem to be secure, we’re not sure we’d use it in a basement where there’s a risk of leaks or in areas where it could get caught, like near pets. While our cats didn’t scratch the organizer during testing, the sides and bottom seemed to snag and tear easily. Still, we recommend using these organizers to safely store shoes, as well as in closets or under raised beds.
During our trial period, we had a new baby and needed a place to store breastfeeding-friendly clothes. Instead of changing our entire wardrobe, we can store and protect our clothes, making them easily accessible at all times.
We noticed some wear on the zipper pull, but it didn’t affect the usability of the product. Other than that, we didn’t notice any quality changes during our testing.
If you’re looking for a box that’s big enough to hold a lot of clothes, the IKEA Skubb storage box is the perfect under-bed storage solution. This product scored among the highest among under-bed storage organizers in our testing, partly because of its large capacity, but also because it’s easy to use and feels sturdy.
This organizer has a sleek, simple look, made from tough recycled polyester on the sides and a flexible material on top. We were able to fit quite a few clothes in there, including 15 pairs of socks, 3 vests, 3 long-sleeve shirts, 3 sweaters, and 5 thicker vests. The top is a little bulgy when zipped, but we still found it easy to open and close.
While the fabric felt thin and a little flimsy, we were still pleasantly surprised to find that the container was very sturdy. Even with the bag filled with clothes, the zipper showed no signs of tearing, and the fabric sides felt more secure than a soft-sided bag. We also liked the straps (there are three of them), which make it easy to pull the container out from under the bed.
Most importantly, we didn’t notice any musty smell after opening the bag, which is probably due to the small mesh holes in the corners of the bag that help keep clothes ventilated. We appreciate this feature, but if you’re looking for a truly airtight storage bag, keep in mind that this isn’t the product for you.
We noticed that this is a fabric storage bag, but it’s not as loose as other fabric products. It holds its shape well and feels pretty sturdy compared to similar products. But while it’s well made overall, we said we’d probably replace the fabric with something a little thicker.
We were so impressed with this product that we ordered two more for testing. Overall, we think this is a high quality product, especially considering the price.
We love the rigid walls of this storage bag, which we think makes it easy to maneuver. We really enjoy using this storage bag, it encourages us to put away clothes more often rather than letting them pile up.
If you don’t need to store much or have limited space (like under a double bed or sofa bed), the Brightroom Under Bed Fabric Storage Box is a great choice. Made from light grey fabric, it looks great and is easy to use thanks to handles on the sides and a smooth glide underneath.
Even though the container is quite compact, we were able to fit more clothes in it than we initially thought, mostly tops, socks, and pajamas (we estimate that it could hold about 20 shirts, 10 pairs of socks, and two sets of pajamas). Because of its small size, we think it’s one of the best options for storing smaller items of clothing (socks, underwear, t-shirts) rather than bulky sweaters or jackets.
Some fabric storage containers can be difficult to get out from under the bed, but this one is not. We found it easy to slide out from under the bed, and we liked that it didn’t damage the floor despite the lack of wheels. That said, the material seems pretty durable, and during testing, even with regular use, we didn’t notice any damage to the bottom. We’re not sure how well this fabric will hold up to stains, but we didn’t have any issues during testing.
It’s also very easy to open and close: simply pull out the storage compartment, lift the lid, and let it naturally fold in half (meaning you don’t have to pull it out from under your bed to get to it, which is a nice bonus). The lid closed tightly, and we were confident that everything inside was safe. At the end of our testing period, all of our clothes looked clean, free of lint, dust, and bugs. We also liked that one side of the lid can be easily opened, allowing for easy access to essentials.
Not only does the NestNeatly SmartCube Under Bed Organizer fold up easily when not in use, it also has one of the best storage capacities we tested. It holds about 50 plus-size T-shirts. We found that they fit well, and since the sides are made of fabric, we felt like we could easily fit more stuff.
The bags come in packs of three, and we think they’d fit under your bed with ease. These containers have soft fabric sides and a clear material on top, so you can see what’s inside without having to unzip them. While it doesn’t have wheels, there is a handle on one end to help you pull it out.
We found the bags easy to open and close, with zippers that slid smoothly without snagging on the fabric. The sides are made of fabric, but feel pretty sturdy. We only had to open the bag twice during testing, but there was no damage during that time.
Note that this is a loose organizer, so it’s not the best choice for under-bed storage where you don’t want your clothes to get wrinkled. We ended up using it to store a few old t-shirts that we don’t wear very often, and we’re glad they’re out of drawers.
Since the sides of these containers are quite soft, we found it a little difficult to slide them under our beds, especially if we had carpet in our bedroom. We found that the hard sides and silky fabric underneath made it easier to push and pull.
We use this option to store handmade items and clothes that we don’t wear very often. We find that it keeps our items neat and tidy, and overall we enjoy using it. We appreciate that this option also comes in a set of three, so it really helps us make the most of our storage space.
We didn’t notice any changes in quality during our testing. Our dogs love sleeping on it, and despite that, the container has stood the test of time.
Handcrafted from seagrass and wicker, the Pottery Barn Savannah Handwoven Seagrass Covered Underbed Basket is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful underbed storage options on this list. Not only will you be proud to see it peeking out from under your bed, but the cover will ensure that your clothes or sheets won’t be covered even if it does peek out from under your bed.
At home, we use it to store blankets. We were able to fit six blankets (most blankets are smaller and thinner), and we think that since it’s so wide, we could squeeze in a few more. The basket, while wide, isn’t very tall, and the lid limits how much you can fit in it, so we found that thin bedding would work better than thick blankets.
