If you really want to experience something new and different in your life, then plan a trip to a winter beach sauna in Illinois.
Oddly enough, I’ve never been a fan of saunas, and my relatives on my father’s side are Finnish. Everyone has a sauna at home. I think it’s because I don’t like extreme temperatures. People were sitting in this stuffy room and then jumping into ice-cold water. It’s a bit over the top for me, but I admire those who do it.
I love the beach so much. I love being on the beach and in the water. I know Illinois isn’t known for its beaches, but I grew up going to North Street Beach in Chicago, right on Machine Lake. Of course, all the best memories are in the summer.
This winter, the Chicago Park District is offering a unique experience. Their sauna is located on North Avenue Beach. They have teamed up with Thunder Domes to create a mobile sauna that will allow you to enjoy this lifestyle anytime, anywhere. Want to try something new? How about this?
These saunas are real. Temperatures can reach 200 degrees Fahrenheit (about 100 degrees Celsius). The park has a full sauna with a heated dome, changing rooms, etc. Just bring a bathing suit, towel, sandals, and water. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids.
If you are brave enough, you can cool off in Lake Michigan after the sauna. Just think about the view of the water and the beautiful cityscape, even just thinking about it is beautiful. Add it to your bucket list this winter.
