Since washable rugs are machine washable, they are easy to clean and maintain without the need for a professional dry cleaner. Most washable rugs are made from stain-resistant polyester and are especially suitable for high-traffic areas such as living rooms, offices, and hallways where people and pets frequently pass.
“Washable carpet is great for high traffic areas, kids’ rooms, and homes with kids and pets,” says Krysten Ledet, owner and principal designer of Krysten Ledet Interiors. “The benefit of washable carpet is that it’s easy to clean, but there are some drawbacks in terms of texture and thickness. Some companies offer thicker carpeting, and I always recommend going with those.”

To find the best washable rug, we tested 28 popular options in our lab, evaluating their quality, texture, durability, and overall ease of cleaning. Then we took them home and evaluated their performance over six months of regular use. Our top picks include rugs for every room in your home, no matter your style or price range.
The Tumble Tabor Washable Rug lives up to its name—in our testing, we found that it removed everything from wine to coffee stains without leaving a mark. Plus, it looks sleek, thanks to a stylish neutral color palette that suits most decor styles. (Tumble also sells a variety of other styles.)
The rug comes in two parts: a puzzle foam backing that you assemble yourself, and a fabric rug that you place on top of it. The foam pad is necessary because the fabric is thin, and the pad adds a little cushioning to prevent it from sliding around on the floor. While it’s not as soft as a regular rug, it’s still very comfortable to walk on.
To test the carpet’s resistance to stains, we spilled coffee, mud, and wine on it. We were very surprised at how well the carpet repelled these substances: they simply pooled on the surface instead of being absorbed. When we wiped the stain with paper towels, the liquid was soaked in that it was difficult to tell if we had spilled it at all. The same goes for the soil we pour on the carpet: when we vacuum the carpet, nothing remains.
After two months, despite numerous spills and other stains on the carpet, there are still no stains left. We can remove all stains by mopping the carpet or washing it in the washing machine. Although the carpet looks large, it is machine washable by folding it.
After six months of use and regular machine washing, we were amazed at how good the rug looked like new. It is the easiest rug we have ever owned to clean. Overall, this rug is very durable and would be a good choice for pet owners. It comes in standard rectangular and long sizes, so it can be placed in hallways, dining rooms, living rooms, and more. Our only wish is that it came in more colors and styles so we could choose.
Materials: Polyester Carpet; EVA Foam with Thermoplastic Resin (TPR) Backing | Size Range: 7 Sizes, from 3′ x 5′ to 9′ x 12′ | Pile Height: 0.25″
While many rugs are too thick to fit under entry doors, that’s not a problem for the Nuloom Brielle Machine Washable Rug, as it’s thin enough to fit under most doors. We found that it stayed securely in place without curling at the edges, thanks to its non-slip backing.
Despite the low or non-existent cushioning, it feels incredibly soft and silky to the touch – although it would be a good idea to pair it with carpet if you want something softer underfoot. The lack of pile also means you’re less likely to have to deal with loose fibers.
During testing, we placed the rug near a busy main entrance. The rug performed well, was durable and easy to clean. However, wet stains were a bit of a challenge – we had no problem removing coffee and wine stains in our dirty test.
After six months, the rug is as soft as ever and hasn’t had a single stain, albeit a very light one. Overall, it’s a simple, inexpensive rug that doesn’t look or feel cheap. Be careful where you place it and, if possible, avoid placing it where a drink might spill.
Material: Polyester | Size Range: 15 Sizes, From 2′ x 3′ to 9′ x 12′ | Pile Height: Less than 0.5″
If you have a furry pet at home, investing in a rug that can be cleaned frequently is a smart move to help prevent dirty paws and other pet stains. This rug from Walmart’s Better Homes & Gardens collection is a great choice for pet owners because it’s durable and stain-resistant. (Better Homes & Gardens is owned by Dotdash Meredith, the parent company of Southern Living.) What’s more, the abstract pattern makes it easy to hide stains or hair until you can remove them.
This is a low pile carpet, which means that Rover or Baby Mitts’ claws and teeth won’t make too much of a mess. In fact, when we brushed the carpet, we didn’t notice any wear and tear and no fibers came out. We can also remove all traces of coffee, chocolate, wine and dirt from your carpet.
However, this rug does not come with a backing or anti-slip pad, which you may need to purchase separately to prevent slipping. This rug has held up well in our front entryway and we only need to do basic maintenance to keep it looking good. This rug has seen a lot of foot traffic from kids and pets, but there are no signs of dirt, stains, or snags.
If this rug was a little thicker and more comfortable, it would be our dream rug. If you want more cushioning for your feet, we recommend getting a rug. Other than that, we love the abstract design, it really helps hide stains, and it’s one of the most affordable options on this list. If you’re looking for a durable rug for a high-traffic area of your home, we recommend getting this one.
Material: Polyester | Sizes: 2′ x 7′, 5′ x 7′, and 7’2″ x 9’10″ | Pile Height: 0.2″
The Kamran rug from Ruggable is one of the best washable rugs we’ve seen, but it’s also one of the most expensive models on our list. Why? Because this rug is thick and soft, almost like a regular rug. You can even make it extra lush by choosing a tufted option, which is three times thicker than regular rugs. In fact, this rug has a ton of options—not only can you choose your comfort level, but you can also choose from 13 sizes (including stripes and circles) and nine colors.
It’s also stain-resistant: after red wine and coffee were spilled on it, we scrubbed it with detergent to remove all traces. We also found that stains did not bleed through to the other side, and vacuuming removed the dirt immediately. Because the fibers are tightly woven, there are no problems with shedding. Despite scratching the surface of the rug several times, it remained intact.
We found this rug to be truly slip-resistant. Not only was it heavy enough to stay in place, but it didn’t move when we kicked it with our feet. You can choose a standard rug or a padded rug, but keep in mind that if you want the extra padding, the price will be a bit higher. And you might want to think twice before placing it near a door, as it can be difficult to walk on. This rug comes in a few different traditional styles, but all of Ruggable’s rugs are worth considering for their comfort and quality.
It’s been two months and we haven’t had any issues with the mat sliding around, especially since our cats absolutely love it and spend a lot of time every day lounging or running around on it. We’ve found that it has a very short pile, so stains are easy to remove with a stain remover and a cloth.
It’s been six months and the rug is still in great condition. Whenever it gets dirty, we throw it in the washer and dryer and it looks brand new again. Overall, this rug is durable and would be a great choice for pet owners. The only issue we had was that the edges were a little flimsy and when our cats scratched them, they would get caught easily.
Material: Polyester with polyurethane barrier | Size range: 13 sizes from 2′ x 3′ to 10′ x 14′ | Pile height: 0.07″ – 0.4″ depending on selection
It may seem like throwing a shag rug in the washing machine is a bit of a risk, but with Ruggable shag rugs, it’s totally possible. We tested this rug in a variety of ways: stain resistance, wear resistance, washing, etc. to see how it would hold up. The results? Even though the rug had some color fade after cleaning, it still retained its original appearance. That’s pretty amazing considering it’s a white rug with no obvious wine or coffee stains.
This rug is soft and silky to the touch, making it a perfect choice for those who want a plush rug. Like the other rugs on our list, this deep pile rug has a grippy bottom thanks to the pad that comes with the rug. You can choose a standard pad or a soft pad. To make sure it doesn’t slip, we gave it a little bounce like Hank Aaron did, and to our delight, it stayed in place.
Although the carpet lost some of its softness after washing, its long pile was still flexible enough to move in all directions. After two months of use in a home with pets, we noticed hair stuck to the carpet (not uncommon with shag carpets) and some discoloration. While hair and dirt can be removed with a simple vacuum, we can’t do anything about the gray color, which is a big problem for us.
Overall, we think this rug would be best suited for a bedroom or pet-free home. However, if you need to place it in a high-traffic area, we highly recommend choosing a color other than white.
Material: Polyester with polyurethane barrier | Size range: 7 sizes from 2′ x 3′ to 6′ x 9′ | Pile height: 2.13″ – 2.4″ depending on carpet backing
This polyester rug from World Market is a fraction of the price of Persian rugs sold at other retailers, but it feels like you’re walking on fine silk. However, this rug is very thin and has very little pile, so if you’re looking for a thick, soft rug, this might not be the best choice. On the other hand, we didn’t expect to lose a lot of fibers when cleaning the rug. As expected, other than being a little sparse, there were virtually no fibers shed.
The carpet was also thin enough that it was easy to clean with both a robot vacuum and a regular vacuum, and the dust we dumped on it was picked up instantly. We also spilled coffee and wine on the carpet to see if they would remove stains. The coffee stains took longer to remove, but we were able to remove both stains in the end.
In six months of testing, we did not notice any stains or signs of deterioration in the texture. The rug is almost exactly as it was when it was delivered. This rug costs $50, making it a good buy and a good choice if you are looking to purchase additional rugs for other areas of your home. The downside is that there are not many design options and you will have to purchase a separate rug pad. Note that while it is machine washable, your washing machine will need to be at least 4 cubic feet to accommodate it.
Material: Polyester | Size Range: 5 Sizes from 2’6″ x 8′ to 5′ x 7′ | Pile Height: Not Specified
The Uphome Round Washable Rug is non-slip and super soft, making it perfect for the bathroom or any room where you want to create a kitschy look. We love how comfortable this rug feels in your hands, and its backing is made of rubber latex, which is perfect for when you get out of the bath or shower with wet feet. Even though it’s woven from bundled fibers, it’s not thick, so it’s less likely to harbor mold and mildew.
We found this rug to be quite stain-resistant, so even if an accident happens, you won’t have to worry about stains or streaks. It’s compact and easy to machine wash, but vacuuming it might be a challenge because of the fringe. Also, be careful if you have a pet: if they get a claw (or tooth) into the pom-pom, it may not last long.
After six months of washing and vacuuming, the quality of the rug hasn’t suffered at all, it’s as clean and soft as when I first got it. We were also impressed that the rubber backing of the rug is tumble dryable.
This rug is inexpensive, and if you are looking for an inexpensive rug, this rug is a great choice. It comes in several sizes and five vibrant colors, making it ideal for a child’s room. Be careful with the tassels, though, as they easily attract dust and require some maintenance to keep them clean.
This rug deserves our praise because it can be used as an outdoor rug, and its unique pattern makes it reversible. It is also very soft, with a surprisingly velvety texture that is pleasant to stand on, which is unusual for outdoor rugs.
While we found this rug to be better quality than other rugs we tested, it did pick up stains easily, which is why we wouldn’t use it as a kitchen rug or bath mat. It is machine washable, though, so if it gets too dirty, you can just throw it in the washer. We also found it easy to vacuum, as we were able to suck up tiny particles from every nook and cranny of the rug.
The rug comes with a pad, but in our opinion it is not enough to keep the rug level. The rug often slides when we walk on it, so be prepared to adjust it if it is in a high traffic area. The rug does not have a pile as it has a rope-like texture. Because of this texture, it is recommended to air dry the rug rather than tumble dry it to keep it in good condition.
Overall, after months of testing, this rug has proven to be durable. It is low maintenance and can be easily cleaned by simply vacuuming or washing with water. However, we have noticed that it has a tendency to collect lint, so you will need to vacuum it often to keep it looking its best. This rug is available in three sizes: rectangle, stripe, and square.
Materials: Recycled | Sizes: 11 sizes from 2′ 2″ x 3′ to 10′ x 14′ | Pile Height: 0.75″
If you’re looking for a durable, slip-resistant rug at a reasonable price, we recommend this jute rug from Safavieh. While it’s not thick, we were impressed by how soft it felt under bare feet. It’s also stain-resistant: The coffee and wine we spilled on it during testing were easily removed with detergent. We were also able to vacuum up all the dirt.
We love its neutral yet charming pattern, which instantly brightens up our entryway. During our six-month trial, the rug stayed surprisingly clean despite its light color.
The fibers don’t attract debris and seem to repel dust, so we found it easy to vacuum regularly. Despite the wear and tear of wet shoes, mud, and machine washing, the carpet still looks like new after six months. We didn’t notice any pilling, loose threads, or scuffs.
The only downside to this rug is that it needs to be protected from direct sunlight to prevent fading, so if you want to place it in a sunny spot, it might not be suitable. But we definitely recommend it as it is stylish and well made.
