Even though so many of my friends’ kids had slept like champs in the Rock ’n Play, I knew that I shouldn’t leave my son in there for long periods of time, and, on some deeper, unspoken level, I knew that I shouldn’t put him in it at all. Those safe-sleep guidelines were branded on my brain. But should and shouldn’t can take on weird new gradations of meaning during the fog of early parenthood. When my son was six weeks old, he was hospitalized for three days with a fever that settled into a bad, persistent cold. He was horribly congested for months; during that period, I doubt he ever slept flat on his back for more than an hour or two at a time, because sinus pressure and nasal drip would leave him coughing and struggling. Where he really slept was in his stroller, or his bouncer, or his carrier, or on top of me or his dad, or in the Rock ’n Play. He wasn’t a fussy baby—he wanted to sleep, and I wanted to help him. No matter how shattered a new parent might be, her metrics of risk assessment can remain largely rational: she may be weighing the roughly 0.00068-per-cent chance that her child will die in a Rock ’n Play versus the extremely high chance that her child will not sleep unless placed in a Rock ’n Play.

Sixty thousand years ago, a narrow fissure opened up in the Amargosa Valley, releasing water pooled deep in the earth and creating Devils Hole, the opening to an underwater cavern. Scientists disagree over just how it happened—whether by way of underground tunnels, ancient floods or receding waters—but several desert fish were separated from the larger population and trapped in Devils Hole. There, a tiny sub-population—the Devils Hole pupfish (Cyprinodon diabolis)—evolved in extreme isolation for tens of thousands of years, eventually, according to scientific consensus, becoming an entirely new species.

You can choose to have the rotation go clockwise or counterclockwise making this one good for both right hand and left-hand use. It has a variable speed dial, so it’s not a matter of low or high speed–you can slowly ramp up or down the speed in gradients like a volume dial on a radio.

From a bench in the sunny Lisbon square, Zilhão says, “Facts are stubborn. You have to accept them the way they are. Science is not about telling people ‘I told you so,’ it’s about different people coming to the same conclusion. It’s a collective endeavor.”

For calluses, there are less powerful electric foot files that use that same spinning motion but slower and with a larger surface area to help exfoliate built up dry skin and calluses. They’re easier to use for most folks, though the same precautions for diabetics stand for these as well. A callus remover is not meant to double as a toenail trimmer.

When the Regios brothers decided they were ready to sell Pizza Villa, they called Sam Minervino, who immediately phoned his brother Rob to see if he would be interested in partnering with him. (Both were regulars at the restaurant. Rob is partial to the garlic chicken pizza with jalapenos.)

When I see and drive the bus in person, it’s nearly perfect. It checks all of the boxes on my list: length, size, accessibility, drivetrain, age, miles, fuel type, condition. It costs slightly more than I intended to spend, but the location and timing can’t be beat. I buy it. The next day, a friend and I drive up to the mountains. I spend two weeks near Vail, skiing and using timeshare vouchers to soak up the joy of warm beds and hot tubs before I transition to the bus. When I move in, it’s still 100% bus. No insulation, no creature comforts, not even a real bed. As an accessible bus, it has an empty space in the back where wheelchairs used to sit. It’s just large enough to fit my twin-size air mattress and the suitcase I’m living out of.

It’s worth mentioning that between those meals, I’d eaten Malaysian curry in a suburban mall, a near perfect pork rib served from a bright red food truck parked outside a bar, and extraordinary Central Texas-style smoked brisket in a brand-new barbecue joint opened by Chinese- and Vietnamese-Americans. All in all, a not untypical day in the three months I spent crisscrossing America in search of the most exciting, stimulating, and outright delicious restaurants to open in the past 18 months, give or take. It’s my personal version of my favorite musical genre: the Great American City Singalong. I can’t say I’ve quite been everywhere (man), but I did go from Phoenix, Arizona, all the way to Tacoma—or at least to Sea-Tac. New York, Los Angeles—how I yearned for you, through the long nights of the polar vortex in Chicago, Indianapolis, Toledo, and St. Paul. Don’t forget the Motor City! And get me to the Promised Land of the perfect restaurant experience.

Residents had long suspected the phones came from a shipping container, but had never been able to find it. Then recently, the anti-litter group Ar Vilantsou declared the phones a symbol of plastic pollution on the beach, launching the Garfield phones as the face of their media campaign this year (honestly, I would be pretty fed up too, seeing this smug cat’s pupil-less face in the sand everyday).

But my biggest purchase of the month was an “exersaucer.” An exersaucer is basically a little activity station that we can plop him in and he can occupy himself with a zillion doodads and gizmos. I put him in one at my friend’s house and he legitimately was almost hyperventilating from happiness — I felt I couldn’t deny him one. Most are full-on hideous and take up a ton of space, but I found one that can fold up (almost none of the ones out there can fold) and is not so offensive if we keep it out. It may not be as “fun” as some of the others on the market that sing and bounce, but, truly, he has no idea and is happy as a clam noodling about in this.

Flush, otherwise known as ‘hella flush’ refers to the way that the rims set as compared to the fenders. When a car is flush, the rims are either intentionally offset to line up with the fender, otherwise, the tires are stretched or negative camber is used to achieve the same goal. Basically, the rims are flush to the fenders. Adversely, a car that’s flush could be slammed so low that it practically scrapes the ground as it rides. If you drive a car that looks ‘hella flush’ then you’re prone to receive a lot of hate because this is typically a look that ricers go for.
