Those who visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s American wing for Artistic Encounters with Indigenous America (on view till May 13) will find themselves swept along by this narrative as it makes camp at the base of Albert Bierstadt’s mammoth Rocky Mountains, Lander’s Peak and slumps, broken, in bronzes by James Earle Fraser or Frederic Remington. Working as the Plains Wars drew to an end, these artists depict Indians in attitudes of pastoral splendor or futile defiance. The reality of Native American life in the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth—reservations, residential schools, programs of cultural and religious “improvement”—are literally outside the frame.

Sachiyo lives in Sussex and says felt is the first craft she fell in love with at school. “Sewing felt mascots became a big trend in our classroom. I spent every penny on felt squares and made little stuffed animals and dolls almost every day. We exchanged end results as gifts for Christmas. I remember giving my favourite to the boy I had a crush on and he really liked it! I love spending time materialising my ideas and making someone smile at the end. It is very rewarding.”

The plates kept coming. There was dambal khacho, a bouncy Georgian fondue; a duck patty with topographical grooves, served with plum sauce; many breads and wines. Plenitude is important in Georgia, where feasting and toasting are cherished, heavily choreographed rites. The meal felt like a food version of one of those movie montages where spinning newspapers keep stacking up on top of one another.

Captain MarvelWhat you need to know is that Captain Marvel is a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, and MCU movies are generally good-to-excellent, and Captain Marvel is no different. It’s smart, funny, and deliriously self-aware, and there’s a bunch of cool explosions. There’s also a young Agent Coulson, an explanation of how Nick Fury lost his eye, and a goddamn kitty-cat named Goose. It is an all-around successful comic book movie, like the 5,000 MCU movies that came before it. “But wait,” you say. “It is different. Aren’t you going to mention… [points at boobs, from one to the other, back and forth, maintaining eye contact, making things weird]?” Ugh, FINE. I’ll say it. Yes, Carol is a woman, and this is the first Marvel movie centered on a woman. I’ve really enjoyed my Bruce Bannerses and Steve Rogerses, but I liked my Carol Danvers even more. In a corner of the cave, cloaked in shadow, my fellow spelunker, the Portuguese archaeologist João Zilhão, inspects a flowing curtain of stalactites with a laser pointer. As we huddle together, red points of light bounce around the surface, finally settling on a pair of blotches. The designs, hazy circles in red ocher, survive in tattered remnants. Cueva de Ardales is one of three sites in Spain examined by Zilhão and his colleagues. Separated by hundreds of miles, the caves house distinctively splotchy handiwork—vivid patterns (spheres, ladders or hand stencils) have been stippled, splattered or spat on the walls and ceilings.

If you’ve been keeping track in the first half of this list you might have noticed that, while there are a handful of women among the Alien writers, it’s still a largely male list. It’s also completely white. Though the Alien franchise has a fairly good record for starring female leads, and including characters of color in its films (I’m making no judgement value on the level or quality of that representation, however, because I think it varies from movie to movie), its written universe is cultivated entirely by white people and predominantly by men. So part two of this list will take a look at ten books written by either a woman, an author of color, or or someone who fits both categories. These novels are are written in the same spirit as Alien, whether that means scary space adventures, tense meetings with alien species, or the dangers of expanding the human race out beyond the stars.

The Jorjadze household was financially insecure and peripatetic. Barbare spent much of her time circuiting the provinces, trying to help her feckless husband and then her hapless son salvage catastrophic careers. She was shaky on the finer points of composition—she depended on her older brother, who had been formally educated, to punctuate her texts—but she had a drive to communicate, to enter the public arena at a time when women, as she once wrote, were told, “You must always keep silent; you must not raise your eyes at anybody, you must not go anywhere, you must block your ears, close your eyes, and sit back.” Jorjadze participated in debates about the modernization of the Georgian language, wrote popular plays and poems, and lobbied for educational reforms. She died in 1895, collapsing as she stepped into a phaeton on yet another filial rescue mission. “She was almost the first woman who took up the pen and entered the terrain of literature,” her obituary in a Tbilisi paper read. She is often called Georgia’s first feminist. She was the nation’s Mary Wollstonecraft, but also its Mrs. Beeton—a thick-browed matron in sausage curls and a lace chikhti-kopi headpiece, who forged herself into an intellectual but is best remembered for a kitchen manual.

One of Cash’s major customizations was for a collector based in Melbourne, Australia, who was drawn to the firm’s trademark rotating Revel-ution wine panels. In the midst of a home renovation with an Italian interior design firm, the client requested that a supersized version of the storage system be constructed, with the standard steel racking dowels replaced by burnished copper versions to match his new countertops and light fixtures. Revel complied, custom-plating thousands of the dowels with antiqued copper and shipping the whole piece Down Under for installation.
