Thanks to the internet, A.S.M.R. seems to have leapfrogged the science entirely. Like synesthesia, it was first discovered by way of individual reports. Unlike synesthesia, it has not depended on brain imaging for cultural acceptance. Our foremost “proof” of A.S.M.R. comes from some people searching for the term and others making videos to populate those searches. All these YouTube users may be right that the feeling is real, but the scientific research still lags far behind.

Right now, that is Georgian food. The hospitality-trend forecaster af&co. recently named it “Cuisine of the Year.” The “Dish of the Year,” the company says, is khachapuri, a term that refers to any number of Georgian cheese-filled breads. (The 2018 winners were Israeli food and rotisserie chicken.) As the trend report noted, khachapuri is photogenic. The dish has been tagged thirty-five thousand times on Instagram, where the version from the Adjara region—an oval slab topped with cheese and a runny egg—is a particular favorite. The yolk, exuding anthropomorphic cuteness, looks like the center of a winking eye. According to the Los Angeles Times, you can get khachapuri in Hollywood, at Tony Khachapüri, which just opened inside a Vietnamese restaurant called Banh Oui. (The family of one of the owners happens to come from Armenia, which borders Georgia to the south.) It is prepared, untraditionally, with garlic sauce. The crust comes dusted with everything-bagel seasoning.

For my final evening in Tromsø, I’d booked a seat on an Aurora Chase. At the appointed hour, I joined the crowds heading down to the waterfront, where the chase vehicles picked up passengers. I heard a coach driver mutter, “Not the best weather outlook tonight.” The prospect of spending the next six hours driving around with little hope of seeing the lights was deeply unenticing. I was about to bail on the adventure when a burly Norseman barked out my name from his roster. I meekly boarded his sleek black van.

Angler is nominally a more accessible companion to Saison, Skenes’s much-lauded Michelin three-star tasting-menu restaurant, but it would be absurd to call it casual in price or style. It took until midway through my meal at Angler to realize the unlikely place it reminded me of most: Danny Bowien’s Mission Chinese Food, in New York City. That was another fully realized, utterly consuming manifestation of one chef’s idiosyncratic view of how to eat. Bowien was channeling some of the scruffy, bohemian, psychedelic roots of the San Francisco where Mission got its start. Angler feels more honest about what San Francisco is today: an often dystopian metropolis of vast tech wealth where, over the past five years, I’ve largely eaten in places with too much capital, too much square footage, and too little soul. For better or worse, Angler feels like the first great restaurant of this new city.

Different tribes had different levels of literacy. As a result, some tribes devised their own indigenous systems of literacy, using unique pictograms. The Adinkra symbol from the old Ashanti Empire is still used as a motif on fabrics created by the Akans in Ghana. In his remarkable book, Religion and Art in Ashanti, Robert Sutherland Rattray identified, recorded and interpreted at least fifty of these symbols. For instance, the symbol of a palm tree (Abe Dua) connoted wealth, self-sufficiency, toughness and vitality, while that of the hen’s feet (Akoko nan) signified parenthood, care, tenderness and protection. The Igbo people in South East Nigeria had a similar ideographic writing script called the Nsibidi, which was also used by other smaller ethnic minorities in Nigeria’s Niger-Delta.

And so the strategy of Patek Philippe cannot be read in any books. You are not going to be able to go to the best school in the world and try to understand that. Because, even myself, I do not understand exactly how it works. It’s just a matter of  having this passion in your heart and being willing to do the best and finest watches in the world. And most of the people working at Patek, that’s how they are also. 

Unfortunately, despite the rapid development and success that Israel has enjoyed in recent years, the country still grapples with a very real poverty problem. According the country’s National Insurance Institute report published in December 2018, Israel has the highest poverty rate of all OECD countries. More children live under the poverty line in Israel than in Mexico. And many more hover just above the poverty threshold, at what experts call “near poverty.” The study revealed that the poverty rate among Israeli households stands at 18.5 percent, and the rate of near poverty was a further 8.1 percent, such that nearly 27 percent of Israelis – more than 1 in 4 – are either poor or very close to it. Why is Israel plagued with such a poverty problem? According to Lurie, it’s incredibly difficult for most families to keep up with Israel’s high cost of living. Rental and housing costs have skyrocketed due to the influx of many immigrants who come and buy or rent expensive apartments, which artificially raises costs. 

But then I got to the baby’s closet. All right, she’s not really a baby. She’s a toddler of two and a half, independent and strong as only a daughter after three sons can be. From the moment she was born, she received only new clothes. And since she is growing according to the normal development charts, the clothes we’d bought just a moment ago for the summer no longer fit when winter rolled around.

“It is really fun seeing the crazy things that people end up making with our stuff. I always encourage people to do that,” Scott said. While working at ReCreative, Scott has seen people sew costumes for entire theater productions using scrap fabric from the store. He has even seen a lady sew a dress entirely from old neckties. According to Scott, these artists are incredibly important in inspiring others to take better care of the world and shop locally and for reused goods.
