And ultimately, one of the reasons I find solace in the outdoors and take refuge here is the color of my skin. My whiteness. Seeing outdoor adventurers or vanlifers who are people of color is rare. This is slowly changing, but it’s a sad and unfortunate truth that the outdoors and its industries are still dominated by white people. We learn through what we see, examples that are set for us. Though my family claims they aren’t “outdoorsy,” we did do things that exposed me to the outdoors while growing up. I went on Girl Scout camping trips, visited National Parks, skied in Montana. All of these things would have been far less likely if the color of my skin was different. And understandably so. The outdoors hasn’t always been a safe place for people of color. Many of the public lands where we white people now recreate were once home to people, people who were forcibly removed or harassed until they left. This history doesn’t exactly instill the desire in minority communities to “get outside.” I’m still grappling with how I can advocate for diversity in the outdoor community, but one of the small changes I’ve seen and something that I try to implement in my life is land acknowledgements—researching whose ancestral homeland I’m camped on or hiking on and acknowledging that history.

TONY: From the beginning, we wanted to pick somebody who would represent the magazine. We felt like underdogs—I mean, we would go to games in the early years, and the SI dudes would be like, “Oh, here they are, the Wall Street Journal.” And then Iverson came along, and we identified with the small guy they said couldn’t do things, and yet he did. So he was sort of our icon. Jordan was the one who sold the best, but Iverson was the heart of the magazine.

Sasaki decided to take minimalism to an extreme, at least from a Western perspective. Liu Cixin’s novel is both a chance for me to slide a SFF novel in translation onto my list and to work in a novel that touches on the “science explores (and possibly transgresses?) the limits of nature” theme that is featured in several of the Alien films and novels. Ye Wenjie witnesses the death of her physicist father after he refuses to denounce the theory of relativity, and is arrested on her own charges of sedition and sent to work in a research facility that searches for alien intelligence. Years later her research for the facility, a complex game involving the titular physics problem, and a string of suicides become tangled up together.

On Facebook and elsewhere, it’s already easy to find parents who are planning to hang on to their Rock ’n Plays, or to search for them on the secondhand market, despite the recall. They apparently see their one-in-146,875 odds as an acceptable risk. “We’ve gotten complaints from parents in terms of not understanding their needs, because the baby sleeps better in the product,” Moon told me. “They felt that, before we push to take something off the market, we need to make sure to offer something similar.” And they may well find it, as long as “infant inclined sleep products” remain on the market. As of this writing, the Kids II Ingenuity Moonlight Rocking Sleeper, a Rock ’n Play peer that Consumer Reports has linked to four infant deaths, is still available for purchase.
