If you’re anything like us, your number one goal for 2025 is to declutter and declutter your life. While this task may seem overwhelming, it’s much easier to accomplish if you break it down into specific categories. First up, toys! Legos, cars and dolls, craft supplies and gadgets, books and balls, and of course, all manner of stuffed animals… they seem to be everywhere, from the kids’ bedrooms and playrooms to the living room and even the kitchen table.
While toy storage should be child-friendly so they’ll be more likely to use it, it shouldn’t look or feel “childish.” With a few DIY tips and some cute storage boxes, you can create a stylish, easy-to-clean toy storage solution that complements your home’s decor. Here, we’ve shared 26 of our favorite toy storage ideas that both you and your kids will love.
Turn simple built-in shelves into a fun play area by simply wallpapering the back of the shelves. Elsewhere in the room, bright red wall sconces and bright yellow doors add additional pops of color.
Another tip for the kids’ room: Paint the floors with garage paint! A PPG breakthrough! The paint is commonly used for garage floors, dries in under an hour, and will definitely stand up to a lot of traffic.
In this playroom, simple canvas boxes are labeled with cards (Balloons, Dolls, Train, Army, etc.) to give the game a cute and practical look. The labels make it easy for kids to find their favorite toys and also help keep the space tidy.
Equip your beds with storage so they can do double duty. Here, a simple bunk bed has drawers underneath to store larger toys and shelves at each end of the corners to store knick-knacks and treasures.
For a versatile storage solution that still keeps things organized, add a few low bookshelves to the wall (paint them bright colors!). Use canvas storage boxes with handles to hold items like Legos, cars, building blocks, and dolls, and leave room for books and larger items. Taller items can be placed on top for easy access. Not only is the lower height safe for toddlers, but it allows them to see the toys and keep them at eye level, which also encourages independent play.
Don’t waste space! Cut a hole in the wall to create a toy storage area. There are two passages here that create a deep ledge where you can place a truck. You can also try a similar design, but without the bed in the back.
A large wire or wicker basket at the foot of the bed is ideal for storing toys. A wooden or padded canopy will hide the toys from view. There’s also a bench for kids to get dressed, or a comfortable place to play or read.
Turn an old soda crate into a fun toy storage box. The handles on the box make it easy for kids to carry it to the play area, and when they’re done playing, they can throw everything back in the box and put it on a shelf or in a cabinet.
In this spacious room with bunk beds, the steps are actually handy drawers that also serve as storage for toys, books, bedding, and more.
Take a cue from Shakers and add a simple hook to the wall (or around the room!) to keep things off the floor. Kids can easily hang individual items on the hooks, and add baskets and bags to organize and store multiple toys.
Place a large canvas toy storage box next to your child’s bed to put away stuffed animals before bed or in the morning. They will also love the storage box because it makes it easy to find their favorite stuffed animals.
If your child is a collector, giving them a place to display their favorites will help keep things organized. Above the desk is a great place to add some shelves—either cleverly built into the surface, like this nook in American Trashman star Mike Wolfe’s home, or hanging ones, with or without stands.
Storage in a kid’s room doesn’t have to be too childish. Organize toy and game storage using storage containers you use elsewhere in the home. In this Georgia home, a row of woven fabric baskets makes good use of the space under the bed, and a vintage metal trash can can be used to store games, building blocks, and more.
Keep kids’ art supplies in clear jars so you always know how many pom poms, pipe cleaners, and popsicle sticks you have. That way, kids can easily figure out what they need to grab and help clean up.
Install a dedicated cabinet in your garage with a large ball bin, hooks for bats and rackets, and labeled bins for bubbles, chalk, helmets, and water toys to keep all your sports equipment and outdoor toys neatly organized.
Set up a large pegboard in your kids’ craft room and outfit it with shelves, baskets, and storage bins to line the walls with colorful craft supplies. You can even leave the space open to display the week’s work.
Place Lego pieces, building blocks, or other toys in coordinating colors in a clear acrylic vase to create a storage solution that’s both fun and visual.
Recreate this cool bedroom by creating industrial-style shelving units with black trim and stained wood planks. The shelves are filled with baskets and bins of varying sizes to store toys.
Place several slatted wooden boxes along one wall in a child’s room to create an adjustable shelving unit that can hold books, games, stuffed animals, etc., and can be rearranged or added to as needed.
Organize toys neatly by color so kids can easily find what they like. This example shows how to organize LEGO bricks by color, which makes cleanup quick and easy. However, this method can be applied to other toys as well.
The built-in shelves on these bunk beds are perfect for storing books and stuffed animals. Add a wall light to encourage kids to read before bed.
