MIT researchers have developed a smart felt fabric blending wool and polyester microfibers, promising to redefine winter sauna safety. Dubbed ThermoFelt, the material automatically adjusts insulation based on skin temperature and humidity.

“Wool’s hygroscopic fibers expand in steam, creating air pockets for cooling,” explains lead scientist Dr. Priya Rao. “Polyester nanofibers then compress to retain heat when exiting into cold air.” Lab tests show the fabric reduces thermal shock by 50%—a major win for winter users prone to dizziness.

Outdoor sauna hubs in Iceland are piloting the technology. “Guests stay in longer despite blizzards,” says a Reykjavik spa manager. Commercial kits (hat + wrist sensors) cost $200, but mass-market versions are underway.
