Renovations at the Big Marble Go Centre are progressing well, according to Medicine Hat city officials.
The $100,000 ice plant renovation began in mid-April and was completed ahead of the scheduled July completion date.
William Percy, the city’s director of recreation, said Thursday the contractor did an excellent job.
“Everything went according to plan and was completed several weeks ahead of schedule,” Percy said.
The opening of the ice rink at the Big Marble Go Centre allowed the removal of ice from the Hockey Hounds Rec Centre.
“We review all construction drawings, equipment, supplied documentation, etc.,” Hirsch said.
“Most of the work has already begun, but most of it will be completed in about a month.”
“We won’t see any major cosmetic changes to the new slide, other than improvements to the steam room,” Percy said.
He added: “We’re doing a lot of work internally on the filtration system and the ozone layer, which will extend the life of the building, hopefully, for another 10, 20, 30 years.”
Construction on the steam bath is continuing as they have managed to complete some demolition work there and elsewhere, Hirsch said.
“We’re remodeling the steam room, starting with the walls, to improve it,” Hirsch said.
“We have the ozone treatment activated, which is part of the filtration system. We go in there through the expansion tanks and set up temporary platforms so they can operate.”
“The contractors worked hard to complete the job in a safe and orderly manner,” Percy said.
The Kinsman Aquatic Center was originally scheduled to open in mid-September, but if the renovations go well, it could open as early as late August.
