To control clutter and keep things more organized, a simple basket is your best bet. The following five baskets can accommodate almost any kind of junk.
As versatile containers for things you have nowhere else to put, they allow you to quickly control clutter and maintain order.
“We use baskets everywhere,” says Lauren Bucksbaum Gordon, who became a partner with Nate Berkus at Nate Berkus Associates in Chicago this summer. “People often associate baskets with storing toys, but we use them to store towels, accessories, firewood, and umbrellas.”
Sometimes, she says, Nate Berkus designers even use small baskets to add a touch of sophistication to plain napkins in the bathroom: “Anything to hide what’s really going on.”
“We look for something that’s durable, affordable and fits in,” Ms. Buxbaum-Gordon says, unless the basket is going to be in a child’s room, in which case the child might choose something more playful. “Usually we just want them to shut up.”
What material looks and works best? “Anything woven from natural fibers will work,” Ms. Buxbaum-Gordon said. “We’ve made a lot of seagrass baskets.”
How to put multiple baskets together? “I always like odd numbers,” she said. “Or use one large basket and one small one and stagger them.”
What’s the best shape? “Sometimes a rectangular basket works better in a certain space, like under a console,” Ms. Buxbaum-Gordon said. “But mostly I go for round ones.”
