The name Mad Rabbit Kicking Tiger (MRKT for short) is certainly intriguing, but what really sets it apart from the crowd is its sleek backpack, briefcase, tote bag, and fanny pack (or belt bag) silhouettes, as well as its use of unconventional materials. It’s no surprise that MRKT’s origins lie in the world of architecture, as one of its co-founders was a prominent international architect.
“I came to China in the early 2000s after working in New York for a few years because it was a hot spot for young architects,” co-founder and design director Tom Penn tells CH. “I’ve been able to design and build over 25 buildings, which would be impossible in the U.S. The downside of building so many buildings here is that I have to deal with a lot of non-professionals in the process, which leads to compromises. That’s why I started a product company. It allows me to be involved in the entire vertical process and create well-designed and manufactured products for like-minded people.” He adds of his design inspirations: “I’ve always loved architects like Alvaro Siza, Luis Barragan, and Alberto Campo Baeza. They’re southern minimalists with strong personalities, messy but sunny. I look for their spirit in all the bags we make.” Their influence is particularly noticeable in bolder colourways such as copper and ultramarine, yet the essence of each piece is effortless warmth.
“I’m not a vegan; I love beautiful leather, durable canvas, or our vibrant felt and microfiber, [but] with so many materials available, I think it’s smart to use less animal by-products,” says Pen. “I truly believe that felt is the most underrated material. It’s the oldest man-made fabric, but I think it’s also the coolest. It’s durable, lightweight, waterproof, mildew-resistant, anti-static, and recyclable. Not to mention it makes beautiful, stylish bags.” He worked with a German supplier to create SUPR felt, a burnt-surface felt he describes as “a timeless feel with all the benefits of felt” without the pilling. There are also a variety of other non-traditional materials available, including animal-free MCRO suede and MCRO leather (which is actually made from microfiber), VEGN leather (made from polyurethane), biodegradable, waterproof THRMO resin, and more.
MRKT bags are available on the company’s website and from distributors in the US, Canada and Australia. New colors and textures will be released in the coming months.
