Garbage cans are one of the main culprits of unpleasant odors in your home, no matter how often you empty them.
But according to a clever method shared by cleaning experts Purdy & Figg in a TikTok video, eliminating odors and making your trash can smell great is “quick and easy.”
They say, “The best way to prevent your trash can from smelling is to buy a sticky felt pad used for furniture, add some pure essential oils to it, and attach it to the lid of your trash can.”
It’s a very affordable trick: a pack of 16 2.5cm thick Scottish felt protectors sells for $7 at Woolworths, which works out to 44 cents per felt protector. At the time of publication, the pack was selling for $6, making it even cheaper.
Meanwhile, essential oils can be purchased at drugstores, health food stores, and online. Although a small bottle will set you back around $20, it will last a long time since you only need a few drops at a time.
Any essential oil can be used for this method, so you can choose a scent that you like or one that is known to help repel pests, such as peppermint oil.
The trash can should be washed once a week using a little washing up liquid and hot water, then dried thoroughly before placing it in a new trash can.
In addition to using felt liners and cleaning your trash can weekly, adding a small amount of baking soda (also known as sodium bicarbonate) to the bottom of your trash bag can help absorb unpleasant odors.
For those struggling to eliminate musty odors from pantries, closets, or dresser drawers, felt pads and essential oils are a great option.
For closets and dressers, you can even try spraying your favorite scent on felt pads instead of using essential oils.
