Already operating in confident championship form was Ma’am Sir, the new Filipino restaurant from Charles Olalia at the nexus of Silver Lake and Los Feliz. Back in 2015, Olalia left the fine-dining world to sell extraordinary Filipino rice bowls and other snacks in a grain-sized luncheonette space in Downtown. Ma’am Sir returns him to a dining room, and it’s a riotous one, draped with hanging vines and lit by swinging fixtures caged in woven baskets. One wall is covered in bright blue-and-green wallpaper that brings to mind M. C. Escher fish. Another features framed photos of Filipino soccer and movie stars. I have been intrigued, but never quite swept away, by Filipino cuisine, as it has become more and more prominent around the country in recent years. That began to change when I tasted Olalia’s version of classics like lumpia, the deep-fried spring roll served here open, like a narrow marrow bone, and topped with a nub of sea urchin. Likewise, his sisig, a sizzling platter of Instagram-defeating browns: pigs’ cheeks, snout, and ears, blended with veal sweetbreads, onion, chile, calamansi, and more, in layer after layer of alternating flavor and texture that I’ve thought of nearly every time I’ve been hungry since.

Freeman yearned to go to art school, dreaming of becoming a fabric designer, but her father strongly discouraged her aspirations. So she concentrated on her art work as a hobby that grew to an all-encompassing vocation. Today, her private collection numbers 200 eggs and she estimates that she has done 800 eggs over the years, most of which were given away as gifts. In February, Wilson took me to the scene of the crime. Wilson has dedicated a good portion of his life to pupfish. He first visited Devils Hole in the 1970s, when he was just 8 years old, tagging along with his geologist mother. Those early visits to national parks and camping trips with his family helped inspire his post-graduate work: the first-ever holistic study of the Devils Hole pupfish. And then the perfect job opened up at the perfect time. “As soon as I defended, this permanent position to study the Devils Hole environment and the pupfish opened up. I’ve been here ever since,” Wilson told me as we stood near the edge of the pond, as cold raindrops began to fall. Just paces away, pupfish flitted through the water.

I’ve had my eye on these for ages and ages. As luck would have it, I hit the equivalent of the shopping lottery when I found them seriously discounted at a sample sale. I do think that if you’re looking to get in on the mule craze, Suzanne Rae is the perfect place to go. They aim to outfit the “modern gentlewoman” (which I’ve already decided is my new aesthetic goal). The pair I scored are actually a neutral navy, but I think this marigold color is just the thing to put a spring in your step come spring.

To relieve the plight of poverty-stricken families in the hope of breaking this cycle, Yad Ezra V’Shulamit distributes over 3,500 food baskets weekly and feeds over 500 children their only hot meal of the day. In addition, children who come to the Yad Ezra V’Shulamit Children’s Centers get help with their homework, enjoy afternoon activities, and receive a brand -new backpack filled with new school supplies and a new coat at the beginning of the year.
